Dodged a bullet Thursday
The spasticity in my left hip and leg hasn't seemed to be getting any less over time so Dr Harben recommended I have what they term a "pump study" to make sure the catheter was working right. I was nervous because I've already had problems with the cath, and Dr Barnette had to replace it. ( dr B does did the original pump implant and the cath replacement because the cath goes into the spine, and she's my neurosurgeon. Dr Harben is a physiatrist. "fizzy"-atrists are physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists. similar to the way a "sports medicine practitioner is different than your regular family doctor. Dr Harbens card saysthat he specializes in "neuro muscular" rehabilitation and "gait training", which is teaching people the "proper" way to walk again after thye've had a traumatic brain injury.when I was going through mu physical therapy, the therapist met with Dr H once a week to discuss my progress and determine where we needed to go next. Whenever I had an appointment with him, he would have me walk back and forth down the hallway between the waiting room and his office so he could observe my gait. he'd then devise a plan of action to discuss with Vivian at their next conference. I'm sure everyone has seen the programs on the discover channel about scientists and doctors use the footage from x-ray cameras to study the way humans walk, I haven't asked him about his training and continuing eduction classes, but I assume they study the kind of footage I mentioned to see how the body "should" work. When I first started therapy. It was astonishing and a kittle dis-heatening to have to learn the "correct" way to do something that I'd been doing all my life. Anyway, back to the bullet dodging, i went to emory Johns creek hospital, which is where dr Barnette does her surgical practicing now. we went to the radiology lab, where i laid down on an x-ray table. under this enourmous movable x-ray machine. dr B used a syringe to inject a special dye inyo the pump then started taking pictures. the machine has a video monitor built into it that she used to watch the dye seep out into the catheter in "real-time". I was elated when I heard the conversation between her and the Medtronic rep who was there. It was hard to restrain myself from shouting "hallelujah, thank you God", but I kept it to myself and thanked the lord in my thoughts. the catheter is working fine so i don't need another operation.Dr b said she would text dr Harben right away. She also said she was going to discuss the dosage with him.
I curently get 800 microliters of the lioresal a day, split into 3 infusions they call "boluses"
I get a bolus morning, noon and night tather than a continuous drip. I'm going to ask dr Harben to set me at the highest dose the pump can manage. The brain and nervous systemis such a mysterious pla,ce how is it that a society th@ cab send men to the moon in a tin can and a radio controlled car to marscan't figure out how to penetrate the mysteries of the human mind?
