this morning, as I watched the touching tributes to the the 3800 Americans killed 8 years ago this day. I was reminded of where I was and what I was doing on that terrible morning, or as alan jackson put it in a song, where I was "when the world changed".In Sept 2001, nieman marcus was undergoing a complete renovation that required one of our security team to be there overnight each night to monitor the construction workers and the alarm system. I had the shift the night of 9/10-9/11. We had rigged an antenna to an old TV to watch during the overnight shifts. at the time, the security office was located just inside the employee entrance. I was sitting at the counter by the window, greting the arriving employees as we usually did, with the TV on in the background so I could monitor the news. My girlfreind at the time was a co-worker, and when she arrived she was crying. she'd heard the news on the radio and was upset. she's from new jersey and her daddys office was in one of the WTC towers. ( we found out later that he was not at work that day, thank God). I brought her into the office and tried to calm her down and console her, (poorly, I thought). in any case, I couldn't let my darling be crying without trying to show her some love and support, rules be damned. I was already breaking them. as a security detective, I wasn't supposed to be dating the sales help, but sometimes love is just more important than a silly rule.Labels: 8 years ago today
